Not ranking in the Top 3 of Google Maps. Ninety days later, #1 organic and #2 map pack — for the same keyword.

Bergen Optometry had a real practice, real patients and a strong reputation in Hackensack, New Jersey. None of that showed up on Google — not for their own name and not for the searches new patients were actually making.

The situation

A trusted practice, invisible online.

Bergen Optometry is a full-service optometry practice in Hackensack, New Jersey, offering comprehensive eye exams, glasses, contact lenses, dry eye treatment including IPL, and emergency eye care. It’s an established clinic with a genuine base of satisfied patients.

None of that translated into visibility. The practice wasn’t in the Top 3 of Google Maps for the searches that actually bring in new patients. It wasn’t in the Top 10 for a single target keyword — including its own name. Mobile pages loaded slowly and the Google Business Profile was missing the services, images and location signals Google needed to trust it.

In a market as competitive as northern New Jersey, being a good clinic isn’t enough if search engines can’t tell.

The approach

Before building anything new, the audit found something already half-won.

Most local SEO work starts by chasing new keywords. Here, the audit found something more useful first: a set of keywords already ranking on page 2 or 3 — positions 11 through 30 — earning zero clicks simply because nobody searches past page 1.

Page 2–3

Terms like "eye exam Hackensack" were already ranking, just outside the first page — needing a push, not a rebuild, to start converting.

Rescuing “almost-ranking” keywords delivers momentum fast, while the deeper technical and authority work — which takes longer to compound — runs in parallel. That combination is why the 90-day result showed movement early, not just at the end.

What the audit found

Three gaps holding a good clinic back.

Mobile experience was failing before content had a chance

A 48/100 mobile PageSpeed score meant patients searching from their phones — the majority of local search — hit a slow site before seeing a single service.

Almost no authority signal for Google to trust

A Domain Rating of 3.4 and a near-empty backlink profile gave Google little reason to rank the site over better-established competitors nearby.

The Google Business Profile wasn't built to compete

Incomplete services, missing images and no established location authority meant the profile that decides Maps visibility wasn't giving Google enough to work with.

The engagement

Three months, in a deliberate order.

Technical foundation first, then the local profile that decides Maps visibility, then the content and authority that compound over time.

MONTH 1 · TECHNICAL FOUNDATION

Fix what was slowing everything down

  • Full audit — broken links, orphan pages, crawl issues resolved
  • Images compressed and lazy-loaded, JS/CSS optimized
  • Core Web Vitals brought to passing across the board
  • LocalBusiness and FAQ schema added, SSL and redirects corrected
MONTH 2 · LOCAL & GOOGLE BUSINESS PROFILE

Build the signals Maps rankings run on

  • Google Business Profile fully rebuilt — categories, services, hours, images
  • 17 new local citations built for consistency and trust
  • A dedicated "Optometrist Hackensack NJ" location page created
  • Review campaign launched, map and location details embedded on-site
MONTH 3 · CONTENT & AUTHORITY

Give Google — and patients — more to find

  • Three new service pages built out: contact lenses, eye exams, pediatric vision
  • On-page fundamentals corrected sitewide — titles, meta, headings, alt text
  • Local backlinks earned through guest posts and industry listings

The results

From nowhere on the map to the double win.

This page covers the diagnosis, the strategy, and the verified numbers. The full technical write-up — Search Console indexing reports, Core Web Vitals data, Ahrefs before/after snapshots, and the Maps ranking screenshots — is documented in detail on my agency’s site

Why it worked

The order did the heavy lifting.

Local rankings depend on Google trusting three things at once: that the site works properly, that the business profile is complete and consistent, and that the site backs up what the profile claims. Skipping straight to citations or content while the technical foundation was still weak would have wasted the effort.

Fixing speed and crawlability first meant the profile work in month two actually had something solid to point to. By month three, the content and backlink work had a foundation strong enough to compound rather than disappear.

On this engagement: I led the diagnosis and directed the strategy across all three months. Implementation was carried out by my team at SEO Service Care, working from that direction.

"Our phones are ringing again — we've seen a big change in how patients find us. Raihan and his team handled everything professionally. Highly recommend for any clinic that needs local visibility!"

Worth taking away

What this case says for any local business in the same position.

Buying reviews is a real risk, not a shortcut. Fake reviews get caught and profile suspensions cost far more than the growth they were meant to fake.

Inconsistent business details quietly undermine trust. A slightly different name, address or phone number across directories makes Google less certain it's the same business — and certainty is what local rankings run on.

Almost-ranking keywords are worth checking before writing anything new. A page sitting on page 2 often needs a push, not a rebuild — and it's faster than starting from zero.

Mobile speed isn't a technical detail — it's the first impression. Most local searches happen on a phone and a slow site loses that visitor before they see a single service.
